It is designed around background use, not stationary farming
For Trainers level 20 or higher who have received the feature, the Explorer Gadget can be activated from the Map View or the Key Items section of the Item Bag. Pokémon GO can then leave the foreground or the phone can be locked while the feature attempts to catch nearby Pokémon and spin PokéStops.
The official support documentation adds an important condition: users still need to move through the real world with their device for the Gadget to operate fully. The software is reducing screen interaction during a walk rather than turning nearby locations into a passive collection point while the phone stays home.
Scopely has not published a technical breakdown of how the feature behaves across different mobile operating systems, nor has it provided official figures for battery consumption or additional mobile-data use. Those are practical questions for a background feature, but there is not enough published information yet to put numbers on them.
There are several hard stops built into the system
Automated catches use standard Poké Balls only. Great Balls and Ultra Balls are not consumed by the Explorer Gadget, and some encounters are excluded. An uncaught Pokédex entry, for example, will not simply disappear into an automated catch attempt before the player has ever seen it.
Daily catch and PokéStop limits also apply, with the allowance linked to Trainer level. Full Pokémon storage blocks further catches, a full Item Bag stops PokéStop interactions, and running out of Poké Balls interrupts the catching side of the feature.
That makes the Gadget much closer to a limited convenience layer than an always-on automation service. The user still has to maintain storage, items and Poké Balls, then return to the app to review the results.
Pokémon GO is moving an accessory-style interaction into software
The Explorer Gadget overlaps with one of the most recognizable benefits of Pokémon GO's physical accessories: interacting with the game without staring at the display throughout a walk. The difference is that this version is part of Pokémon GO itself.
Scopely has deliberately prevented stacking the two approaches. A paired accessory and the Explorer Gadget cannot be active at the same time. An accessory can remain paired, but it must be disconnected before the Gadget can take over. Switching back to the accessory while the Gadget is active ends its run, with no second activation available until the following day.
For people who never bought an accessory, that gives the phone a new capability without adding another piece of hardware to the routine. Existing accessory owners instead gain another option, not an extra layer of automation.
Availability is still account-dependent
The feature remains in a phased rollout. Trainer level 20 is one requirement, but meeting it does not guarantee that the Explorer Gadget has already been enabled for a particular account.
Pokémon GO has not announced a date for full worldwide availability. Until that changes, the most important troubleshooting detail may simply be whether the account has actually entered the rollout.
When it has, the app provides a post-session summary showing which Pokémon were caught, how many were caught and how many PokéStops were spun. It is a mundane interface detail, but a necessary one when the entire point of the feature is that the user was not watching the game do the work.
